As a leader of Higginbotham’s Energy and Marine Practice in Houston, Ted specializes in creating insurance and risk management programs for commercial clients that are engaged in a wide variety of operations, ranging from offshore risks and maritime ventures to onshore risks like exploration and production, pipelines, storage facilities, logistics, petrochemicals, ports, terminals, international operations and renewables.

Ted has managed sizable service teams and maintains a vast network of insurance market relationships across the globe. Ted believes in serving as more than just a transactional insurance broker; he is a risk management consultant with deep experience across multiple verticals within the energy and marine space.

Ted attended Washington & Lee University, graduating cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in 1995. He launched his insurance career as a technician in the London market, working in Lloyd’s of London and various London company markets. After six months, he moved home to Houston, where he worked for various retail brokers.

After five years, Ted enrolled in Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business, graduating with an MBA in May 2002. Since then, he has been involved with marketing and servicing the insurance needs of energy- and marine-related companies, joining the Higginbotham team in 2020. He has extensive contacts across the global marine and energy insurance market, particularly in London and the United States.

Ted previously served on the Planning Committee of the Houston Marine & Energy Insurance Conference (HMEIC), including a two-year term as chairman, and on the Board of Directors for HMEIC’s not-for-profit sponsor, Marine Insurance Seminars, Inc. Before his involvement in HMEIC, Ted served as an officer of the Houston Mariners Club for four years, including one year as Skipper (President). He also previously served as president of Jones Graduate School’s Alumni Association, representing graduates of the Rice MBA program.

Additionally, Ted is a member of the Houston chapter of the Washington & Lee Alumni Association, The Forest Club, the Rummel Creek Men’s Club, the International Liquid Terminals Association and the American Waterways Organization. Ted lives in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Susan, and three children, Max, Lauren and Ben.
