Gene Mathis

Gene Mathis is a Managing Director at Higginbotham. He joined Higginbotham in 2022 through a partnership with Mathis Tibbets and Mathis, where he had served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

For much of his professional career, Gene has worked with contractors and construction-related businesses. He also assists clients with employee benefits, surety bonds, life and property and casualty insurance. He takes pride in having a continuous commitment to his clients.

Gene received a Bachelor of Business Administration with honors from Memphis State University. He served as an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis for several years. Gene also holds a master’s degree in insurance management from Boston University.

Outside of the office, Gene is actively involved in his community, supporting Calvary Rescue Mission, Les Passees, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Christian Brothers High School, Youth Villages and the University of Memphis.

Gene is married to Virginia, and the couple has four children and four grandchildren. One of his sons, Alex, also works as a Managing Director at Higginbotham.

In his free time, Gene enjoys reading, history, art and exercise. He also collects antique weapons, clocks and watches and Winston Churchill memorabilia.
