What does group vision insurance cover?

While covered expenses will vary based on your plan, vision insurance can typically help with the cost of:

Bifocal Lenses

Progressive Lenses

Anti-Reflective Coating

Basic Eyeglass Frames

Premium Eyeglass Frames

Photochromic Lenses

This list isn’t exhaustive, and different providers may cover products and services not on this list. Some premium eyewear products and enhancements may cost extra or be excluded.

How does a group vision plan work?

Much like voluntary vision coverage, but with the premium cost shared between the employer and the employee, group vision insurance helps cover the cost of eye exams, prescriptions and contact lenses.

Unlike other types of insurance with unlimited benefits beyond a pre-set deductible, most vision plans employ one of these two cost savings strategies:

  • Benefits Package: Vision Benefits Packages typically function like standard health insurance, providing in-network preventive and basic care for small, affordable co-pays.  While out-of-network reimbursement may be available, employees maximize their benefits by staying in-network.
  • Discount Plan: Discount Plans function more like a prescription discount card, offering employees fixed discount prices on eyewear and lenses. These plans don’t typically cover eye care services but may offer discounts on exams and procedures. In most cases, these discounts can considerably decrease an employee’s total cost of care.

In some cases, vision insurance can also offer discounts on elective corrective surgery like LASIK or PRK.
